The RSP Caption Contest Winner is….

Having to play catch up. I thought I’d have it later in the day but I changed this entry to reflect the entry I made later about readers voting on it.

Marvin Jones Highlights from 2010 (Hat tip to ninersnation.com for mentioning my blog and finding this highlight package). What you’ll find here are strong examples of body control, hand-eye coordination, patience and toughness (not necessarily power) as a runner, and good speed and quickness. I also think you’ll see some of the light-footed precision as a route runner.

What to Expect from the Senior Bowl

College all-star game practices are different every year because there’s always a new coaching staff running them. This year, both the Redskins and Vikings coaches did less with its running backs and quarterbacks than what I saw in team practices run by the Lions, Bengals, Bills, and Dolphins in recent years. The same can be said about defensive players in general, because they are not allowed to finish plays.

The game will provide a little more insight into these players where practice couldn’t. Although film study of players during their college careers is still far and away more important than what this game will reveal, I thought it worthwhile to share what I believe you’ll see in the actual North-South match up. Here’s what I saw in Mobile this week that I believe will translate to the game: Continue reading

Can you tell which man is wearing Depends? (One of the caption entries I liked for this week's RSP Caption Contest)

It has been a little over 24 hours since I announced the RSP Photo Caption Contest and the response has been good. Cecil, Chad, Michael, and Wes will be judging the quality of the captions on Wednesday after Senior Bowl practices. Since I’m just the tiebreaker, I thought I’d list some of the early favorites (from my perspective) for a shot at a free RSP (contest details and entry form can be found on this page):

  • “Failed Fathead concepts.”
  • “Bravo’s new hit series: The Real House Husbands of Tampa Bay.”
  • “Can you tell which man is wearing Depends?”
  • “AVN’s winner for worst adult film of all time: The Island of Misfit Boys”

A special thanks to these guys for taking one for the team. Now, onto the reads, listens, and views of the week – including some LaVon Brazill highlights. Continue reading

RSP Caption Contest: Win a free RSP

Caption Contest: Best caption for this photo of my colleagues at the Shrine Game practices wins a free past edition of the Rookie Scouting Portfolio. The usual suspects are: (L-R) Bleacher Report's Michael Schottey, NFL Network's Chad Reuter, National Football Post's Wes Bunting, and ESPN Radio/Footballguy Cecil Lammey.

I lifted this photo from Cecil Lammey’s Facebook page. You have one week from tonight to give me a fitting caption for this photo. Make it funny, but keep it (reasonably) cool. If you want the nomination to even come before the judges panel don’t cross the line.

Most likely we’ll all be having dinner together on Wednesday night. I want to have a strong collection of nominees to present to these four to judge the best caption to go with the photo. I will be the tie-breaker judge if needed. The winner gets a free Rookie Scouting Portfolio publication from 2006-2012. Second and third place winners get a free RSP from 2006-2011 or a 50 percent discount on the 2012 RSP.

You must answer every question on the form to qualify. I might give out more RSPs for really funny self-deprecating facts. If you’re going to win for potentially busting on these guys, you better be able to deliver something funny about yourself.

The Caption Contest is Over. Winners Announced Here

While I’m finishing up more game film on Juron Criner and Chris Polk and still 8-10 hours from giving you some takes on the Shrine Game Participants, here’s a video performance of an old friend of mine who is a performer, arranger, and composer. Once you hear Darren Kramer play you’ll never hear the “paperclip”  the same way again.

Message from Footballguys Players National Champion

I had my worst fantasy football sesason in 15 years - by far - until I got this email below.

I had my worst year in 15 seasons playing fantasy football. I made the playoffs in only 50 percent of my leagues. In fact I had four teams miss the playoffs, which accounts for 40 percent of my total non-playoff qualifiers in my career in the hobby. But a nice consolation has been the number of fantasy owners emailing me over the past few weeks thanking me for suggesting they consider a different approach to drafting teams, which I termed the Upside Down Drafting strategy.

But the email I got this afternoon from Ronald Eltanal, the $125,000 winner of the Footballguys Players Championship, makes me feel like a champion even if I didn’t win one this year. See below…

Matt,

I just won the Footballguys Players Championship (I still can’t believe it as I write it). I’m writing to thank you for your advice this season, in your footballguys articles and in the stuff you write for your rsp blog. Take a look at the squad I drafted, and you can see it has your fingerprints all over it: Continue reading

Gone Fishing

For the next week I’ll be spending most of my waking hours watching college prospects. I have studied nearly 100 players this fall for the 2012 RSP, which will be available on April 1. With time off from work, I’m devoting my break solely to watching film.

I’m also depressed about Adrian Peterson’s injury. I couldn’t watch any more NFL football for the week after seeing it. Although we know most players leave the game due injury, when it happens to a player with this kind of talent and passion for the game makes the heartbreak of injury more unbearable.

I might write about it, but I have goals to reach this week with the number of players I want to study by the New Year. If you don’t hear from me by then, Happy New Year!
